Denmark does not offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. The most structured alternative for a founder audience is Startup Denmark, a route for non-EU/EEA entrepreneurs who want to build an innovative, scalable business from Denmark.

Startup Denmark is not a general freelancer or remote-employee route. The business plan must first be approved by the Startup Denmark expert panel. Only after that approval can the founder apply to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) for the residence and work permit.

Application Flow

1. Confirm that the case is an innovative startup case, not foreign payroll work, ordinary freelancing, passive investment, or a generic small business.
2. Prepare a business plan for the Startup Denmark expert panel.
3. Submit the business plan through Startup Denmark.
4. If approved, submit the residence and work permit application to SIRI.
5. Prepare passport, fee payment, biometrics, self-support, ownership/team, and company evidence as required.
6. Move to Denmark, establish the startup, and keep business records aligned with the approved plan.
7. Register the business, tax, VAT, accounting, payroll, and beneficial ownership items when required.
8. Apply for extension before expiry if the startup basis continues.

Good Fit

This route is strongest for founders building an innovative, scalable company with a real Denmark operating plan.

Poor Fit

It is usually a poor fit for foreign payroll employees, ordinary freelancers, passive owners, lifestyle businesses with no innovation case, and applicants looking for a simple digital nomad permit.
