Denmark does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. The closest structured alternative for a founder audience is Startup Denmark, a residence and work route for non-EU/EEA founders with an innovative, scalable business plan.
For evidence and timing, see the timeline and documents guide. For Danish company setup, CVR registration, VAT, and operating records, use the tax and business setup guide. The structured programme record is Denmark Startup Denmark Alternative.
Quick Answer
Denmark can work for a serious founder whose business plan can pass Startup Denmark’s expert-panel review and who can then qualify for a SIRI residence and work permit. It is not a general permission for foreign payroll employment, ordinary freelancing, or passive company ownership from Denmark.

| Startup team of up to 3 founders | Joint Startup Denmark business plan |
| Danish employer wants to hire the applicant | Employment scheme analysis |
| Foreign payroll work from Denmark | Work/residence and tax analysis, not Startup Denmark by default |

| Passive investor or shareholder | Weak Startup Denmark fit |
Startup Denmark Logic
Startup Denmark is built around a two-step proof sequence. First, the business plan is assessed by Startup Denmark’s expert panel. The route is meant for innovative, scalable businesses with development potential in Denmark.
After business-plan approval, the founder applies to SIRI for the residence and work permit. SIRI is the immigration authority gate; the expert-panel approval alone is not the residence permit.
The team rule matters for founders. Startup Denmark allows up to 3 founders to submit one joint business plan. If the plan is approved, each founder still needs the relevant immigration filing.
Remote-Work Fit
Foreign customers are not automatically a problem. A Danish startup can sell software, climate technology, design tools, fintech products, AI services, life-science infrastructure, marketplace products, or other innovation-led services internationally.
The weak pattern is different: a person wants to live in Denmark while remaining a foreign employee, invoicing a few existing clients as an ordinary freelancer, or holding passive shares. That should not be dressed up as Startup Denmark.
Quota And Timing Risk
SIRI states that there is a yearly quota of 75 residence and work permits under Startup Denmark. That quota makes timing more important than in uncapped routes.
Applicants should not treat expert-panel approval, SIRI filing, biometrics, entry logistics, company setup, and family timing as one step. The cleaner plan is sequential: approve the business idea, file the residence permit, complete immigration formalities, then build the Danish operating record.
Extension And Residence Path
SIRI states that a first Startup Denmark permit can be granted for up to 2 years. Extension can be granted for up to 3 years at a time if the conditions continue to be met.
Denmark has a permanent residence framework, but it is a separate application with its own current residence-period, work, language, self-support, conduct, and other conditions. Startup Denmark residence may form part of a longer-term residence story, but founders should not treat permanent residence as automatic.
Good Fit / Poor Fit
Good fit if:
- the applicant is a real founder;
- the business is innovative and scalable;
- Denmark is a credible operating base;
- the applicant can document self-support;
- company, tax, accounting, and founder records can be kept coherent.
Poor fit if:
- the applicant only wants to keep a foreign payroll job from Denmark;
- the business is ordinary freelancing or consulting;
- ownership is passive;
- the plan has no innovation or scale case;
- the applicant wants a simple digital nomad visa.
