Bulgaria does not offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. The most structured alternative for a founder audience is the StartUp Visa certificate, an official certificate for a high-tech and/or innovative project that can support residence permission for non-EU founders.
The name is easy to misunderstand. The official application portal states that the StartUp Visa is not itself a residence visa, but a certificate that can serve as one document in the residence-permit basis for foreigners who want to develop innovative or high-tech business in Bulgaria.

Application Flow
- Confirm that the case is an innovative or high-tech founder case, not ordinary remote employment, generic freelancing, passive investment, or a basic local business.
- Prepare the StartUp Visa certificate application and project evidence.
- Submit the certificate file through the e-government / National Investments Management System channel.
- If the project is approved, use the certificate as part of the immigration file for Bulgaria.
- Prepare visa, entry, residence, address, insurance, company, and family evidence according to the applicant’s nationality and current migration rules.
- Register or operate the Bulgarian company consistently with the approved project.
- Keep Commercial Register, tax, VAT, accounting, payroll, bank, contract, and product records aligned with the startup basis.
- Renew or extend only if the business and residence basis continue to match the official route.
Good Fit
This route is strongest for founders with a real innovative or high-tech project, a credible Bulgaria operating plan, documented personal funds, and evidence that the project has technical, market, funding, research, or partnership substance.
Poor Fit
It is usually a poor fit for foreign payroll employees, ordinary freelancers, passive owners, low-innovation local businesses, and applicants looking for a simple digital nomad permit.
