Montenegro’s digital nomad route is paperwork-heavy but relatively easy to sequence if you separate entry, D visa, and residence.

For route fit, start with the main Montenegro guide. For tax, family, and practical setup, use the tax and practical setup guide.

D Visa Documents

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists digital nomad as a long-stay D visa purpose. The D visa is for stays of more than 90 days but not more than 180 days in a one-year period.

For digital nomads, the MFA list includes:

DocumentPractical Note
Valid travel documentMust remain valid at least 3 months longer than the visa
PhotoOne colour photo, 35 mm x 45 mm
Purpose proofEmployment contract or other document proving electronic work for a foreign company or own company abroad
Company registration proofCertified copy from the country where the company is registered
Consular fee proofPayment evidence
Support proofSalary, bank confirmation, cash, checks, or other means evidence may be requested
Accommodation proofMay be requested to assess the visa file
Criminal-record proofOptional for visa assessment, but mandatory when later applying for residence

Residence Documents

The digital nomad portal says the residence application is submitted personally to the Ministry at the place of residence. With the request, the applicant must attach proof of:

DocumentWhy It Matters
Financial meansGeneral residence condition
AccommodationGeneral residence condition
Health insuranceGeneral residence condition
Valid passport or identity documentMust be valid at least 3 months longer than the residence period
Criminal-record conditionNo unconditional prison sentence over 6 months for an ex officio offence in the country of origin
Digital nomad justificationEmployment contract or other document proving electronic work for a foreign company or own foreign company

The MUP officer fills the request form at the counter, prints it bilingually, and takes the applicant’s photograph, two fingerprints, and digitised handwritten signature.

Timing Rules

Timing PointRule
Tourist/short stayUp to 90 days in 180 days unless a narrower nationality rule applies
D visa decisionUsually 10 days, extendable to 30 or 60 days if more review or documents are needed
Residence filingA complete application before the 90-day stay expires allows the applicant to remain until the final decision
Digital nomad residence decision40 days from a proper application
Initial residence validityUp to 2 years
ExtensionUp to 2 more years
Extension filingNo later than 30 days before expiry
New digital nomad permitOnly after 6 months from expiry of previous digital nomad temporary residence

Income Evidence

The official English digital nomad residence page requires proof of financial means but does not state a fixed euro amount. The implementing rulebook is commonly summarised as tying the amount to a wage multiple, which means old euro figures can become stale.

Before filing, ask the relevant consulate or MUP office which income or bank-balance threshold they currently apply and what months of statements they expect.

Document Formalities

Applicants should expect foreign documents to need a practical chain:

  • current issue date;
  • apostille or legalisation where applicable;
  • certified Montenegrin translation where requested;
  • exact name matching across passport, contracts, bank records, and company extracts;
  • originals or certified copies where the office requires them.

Common Failure Points
