Latvia’s remote work visa gives a temporary basis to stay and work remotely. It does not make tax, banking, social security, insurance, or local-work questions disappear.

For immigration eligibility, start with the Latvia Remote Work Visa guide. For evidence preparation, use the documents checklist.

Quick Answer

A Latvia remote work visa holder can become Latvian tax resident if their declared place of residence is in Latvia or if they stay in Latvia for 183 days or longer in any 12-month period that starts or ends in the tax year. Latvian residents can be taxed on income received in Latvia and abroad. The visa does not authorise employment in Latvia, and applicants need health insurance valid in Latvia and Schengen with at least EUR 42,600 liability coverage.

Tax Residency

The State Revenue Service explains that a physical person is considered resident for Latvian tax purposes if the person’s declared place of residence is in Latvia, or if the person stays in Latvia for 183 days or longer in any 12-month period that starts or ends in the tax year.

That means a one-year D visa can easily create tax-residence questions. Count days carefully and keep evidence of where you lived, worked, paid tax, and remained socially insured.

Income Tax Scope

The Ministry of Finance describes taxable income for Latvian residents as income obtained in Latvia and abroad. The State Revenue Service’s 2026 personal income tax rate page lists progressive personal income tax rates of 25.5% and 33%, with an additional 3% rate from annual income over EUR 200,000.

Remote workers should review:

  • whether Latvia sees them as tax resident;
  • whether the home country continues to tax the income;
  • whether a tax treaty changes the final result;
  • whether the foreign employer creates Latvian payroll or permanent-establishment issues;
  • whether self-employed work must be registered or reported in Latvia.

Local Work And Social Security

OCMA states that remote work visa holders are not entitled to employment in Latvia. The earlier government explanation of the route also framed it as foreign remote work without Latvian employment rights or Latvian social insurance.

That means local employment, local clients, local company ownership, and social-security registration should not be improvised under this visa. If the facts change, review a work or residence-permit route with local advice.

Health Insurance

The official remote-work visa checklist requires a health insurance policy valid in Latvia and Schengen member states, with at least EUR 42,600 minimum insurer liability during the insurance period.

For a one-year stay, check:

  • full-period coverage;
  • emergency and non-emergency exclusions;
  • repatriation terms;
  • pre-existing-condition limits;
  • whether family members have independent coverage if they use a separate stay basis.

Banking

The remote work visa does not guarantee a Latvian bank account. Banks may ask for identity documents, address, source-of-funds evidence, tax residence, employer or self-employment records, and sanctions screening.

If income is paid by a foreign employer or clients, a Latvian bank account may be optional. An existing SEPA-capable account may be enough for rent and daily expenses, but landlords and service providers can vary.

Residence And Address Records

OCMA requires documents confirming the expected place of residence in Latvia. Keep address records even after approval because they help with banking, tax-residence analysis, and any later immigration applications.

Useful records include:

  • lease or booking history;
  • travel-day calendar;
  • utility or accommodation payments;
  • foreign tax-residence certificate;
  • employer remote-work approval;
  • insurance certificate.
