Latvia’s remote work visa is a national long-stay D visa for third-country nationals who remain employed or self-employed through an OECD member state while working remotely from Latvia.
For timing and fees, see the timeline and costs guide. For evidence preparation, use the documents checklist. For family and repeat-visa planning, read the family and repeat-visa guide. The structured programme hub is Latvia Remote Work Visa. Investors should compare the separate Latvia Investor Residence Permit guide.
Quick Answer
Latvia’s route is best suited to remote employees or self-employed people whose employer, registration, and evidence sit in an OECD member state. The visa can be issued for up to one year. A repeat remote-work D visa may be possible for another year, but remote work visa holders are not entitled to employment in Latvia. The current income benchmark published by OCMA is EUR 4,538/month.

Timeline At A Glance
- Confirm that you are a third-country national and are not blocked by Latvia-specific visa restrictions.
- Confirm OECD employer or OECD self-employment registration.
- Check the current income benchmark.
- Gather passport, online visa form, photo, insurance, accommodation, and work evidence.
- File with the competent Latvian representation or OCMA process.
- Pay the state fee and respond to extra checks if requested.
- Use the D visa for remote work from Latvia.
- Before expiry, plan a repeat D visa, another residence route, or departure.
Who It Is For
Latvia’s official route covers two profiles:
- an employee whose employer is registered in an OECD member state;
- a self-employed person registered in an OECD member state.
In both cases, the person must be able to perform their duties remotely while staying in Latvia.
This OECD-country condition is central. A remote worker with a non-OECD employer may be a good nomad in ordinary language, but may still fail Latvia’s official remote-work visa test.
Income Requirement
OCMA states that the salary or self-employment income must be at least the previous year’s average monthly gross salary of employees multiplied by 2.5. The current amount shown by OCMA is EUR 4,538/month.
For employees, the file must show current employment through a tax administration or social insurance institution of the OECD member state, plus employer confirmation of at least six months of previous employment with that employer, salary amount, and remote-work permission.
For self-employed applicants, the file must show income from self-employed activity during the last six months, certified by the tax administration of an OECD member state.
Local Work Restriction
OCMA is explicit: remote work visa recipients do not have the right to employment in Latvia.
That means this route should not be used to take a Latvian job, build a primarily Latvian client base, or substitute for a work visa with the right to employment. If the plan includes Latvian work, use the normal employment or residence-permit framework instead.
Good Fit / Poor Fit
Good fit if:
- you have an OECD employer or OECD self-employment registration;
- you can document at least six months of qualifying work or income;
- your income is above EUR 4,538/month with margin;
- the stay is temporary;
- you do not need Latvian employment rights.
Poor fit if:
- your employer or self-employment base is outside the OECD;
- you want to work for Latvian employers or clients;
- you need family members to rely on the same visa route;
- you need a direct permanent-residence strategy from the visa itself.
Practical Watchpoints
- The route is a visa, not a residence permit.
- Russian citizen restrictions apply; the Immigration Law excludes Russian citizens from this remote-work visa basis.
- A repeat remote-work D visa may be possible, but after the repeat visa Latvia blocks another long-stay visa on the same basis for six months.
- Tax residence can arise if a declared place of residence is in Latvia or the person stays 183 days or longer in any relevant 12-month period.
- Health insurance must cover Latvia and Schengen with at least EUR 42,600 liability limit.
