Estonia’s Digital Nomad Visa follows Estonia’s normal visa process, with extra evidence proving remote-work eligibility.
For eligibility, start with the Estonia Digital Nomad Visa guide. For evidence preparation, use the documents checklist.
Quick Answer
Applicants can apply for a C visa for up to 90 days or a D visa for stays over 90 days and up to 365 days. The official e-Residency FAQ lists the state fee as EUR 90 for a C visa and EUR 120 for a D visa. Applications can be filed through an Estonian representation, an authorised VFS office, or a Police and Border Guard office if the applicant is already legally in Estonia.

Timeline At A Glance

- Identify the responsible Estonian representation, VFS office, or PBGB option.
- Fill the visa application form online, then print and sign it.
- Prepare standard visa documents and digital nomad evidence.
- Submit the application in person.
- Wait for processing and background checks.
- Enter Estonia or continue legal stay if approved.
- Track the 365-day and 548-days-in-730-days limits.
Application Routes
The official e-Residency FAQ says the official application routes are directly through an Estonian representation handling visa applications, directly at a Police and Border Guard office, or at a VFS office authorised to handle applications for Estonia.
If there is no Estonian representation in the applicant’s country, the MFA says the applicant can use the representation accredited to that country or the nearest visa-issuing Estonian representation, subject to prior appointment agreement.
Costs To Budget For
| Cost | Notes |
|---|---|
| C visa state fee | EUR 90 |
| D visa state fee | EUR 120 |
| VFS service fee | Additional where VFS is used |
| Insurance | Health or travel medical insurance for the stay |
| Translations/legalisation | Needed where public documents are not accepted as-is |
| Travel to representation | Important if there is no local Estonian mission |
| Accommodation | Not always the hardest requirement, but practical stay planning matters |
| Tax advice | Useful for stays near or over 183 days |
D Visa Stay Limits
The D visa can be issued for up to 12 consecutive months, with a stay period up to 365 days.
The Estonian MFA warns that with two consecutive D visas, the total stay cannot exceed 548 days within 730 days. This means Estonia’s Digital Nomad Visa should not be treated as a simple rolling residence permit.
Practical Watchpoints
- The application form can be filled online, but the signed application and supporting documents are submitted in person.
- Check whether the representation handles visa applications before travelling.
- VFS may be authorised in some countries but not all.
- The D visa gives temporary stay rights, not residence permit rights.
- Plan Schengen travel separately from Estonia stay time.
