Estonia’s Digital Nomad Visa is a temporary visa route for remote workers who can work location-independently through telecommunications technology.

For timing and fees, see the timeline and costs guide. For evidence preparation, use the documents checklist. For family and second-visa planning, read the family and second-visa guide. The structured programme hub is Estonia Digital Nomad Visa.

Quick Answer

Estonia’s route is best suited to remote workers who can prove foreign employment, foreign company ownership/activity, or freelance/consulting services mostly to foreign clients. The current income benchmark is EUR 150/day, commonly EUR 4,500/month, and applicants must show income evidence for the 6 months before applying. The long-stay D visa can allow up to 365 days in Estonia.

Timeline At A Glance

  1. Confirm that your work is location-independent.
  2. Decide whether C visa or D visa matches the stay.
  3. Prepare standard visa documents and digital nomad evidence.
  4. Submit through an Estonian representation, authorised VFS office, or PBGB office if legally in Estonia.
  5. Wait for background checks and visa processing.
  6. Enter or stay in Estonia under the visa.
  7. Track tax and D-visa stay limits before extending plans.

Who It Is For

Estonia recognises three main remote-work profiles:

  • employee of an employer registered in a foreign country;
  • person conducting business activity for a foreign-registered company where the applicant is a partner or shareholder;
  • freelancer or consultant mainly serving clients whose permanent establishments are in foreign countries.

The applicant must show that the work can be performed independent of location using telecommunications technologies.

C Visa Or D Visa

The Digital Nomad Visa can be issued as a short-stay C visa or long-stay D visa depending on planned stay.

The C visa is for stays up to 90 days. The D visa can be issued for up to 12 consecutive months with a stay period up to 365 days. During a D visa’s validity, the holder may stay in the rest of the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Income Requirement

The official e-Residency FAQ states that the current income threshold is EUR 4,500/month gross of tax, and explains the benchmark as EUR 150/day. Applicants need evidence of sufficient legal income during the 6 months before applying.

The authority reviews evidence case by case. Salary, dividends, director fees, rental income, interest, shares, assets, and other evidence may be considered, but the remote-work purpose still needs to be proven.

Good Fit / Poor Fit

Good fit if:

  • the stay is temporary;
  • the income evidence is stable and above the benchmark;
  • the work is mainly for a foreign employer, foreign company, or foreign clients;
  • the applicant understands that e-Residency is separate from immigration status.

Poor fit if:

  • the applicant needs a long-term residence permit immediately;
  • income evidence is below the threshold or too irregular;
  • the applicant wants e-Residency to function as a visa;
  • the main purpose is Estonian employment rather than foreign telework.

Practical Watchpoints

  • The Digital Nomad Visa does not create permanent residence or citizenship by itself.
  • e-Residency gives digital business access, not travel rights.
  • Local Estonian work may be possible only as additional work; the main purpose must remain foreign telework.
  • Russian and Belarusian citizen visa restrictions may apply.
  • Tax residence can arise after 183 days or if the place of residence is in Estonia.
