Albania’s digital mobile worker file is document-driven. The weak cases are usually not about the name of the route; they are about unclear contracts, missing legalisation, weak support evidence, or confusion between visa and residence steps.
For route fit, start with the main Albania guide. For tax residence, family, and practical setup, use the tax and practical setup guide.
Timeline Summary
| Stage | What To Prepare | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Entry check | Visa-free, type C, or type D/LD position | Some applicants need a D visa for residence |
| 2. Lawful stay | Proof the applicant is lawfully in Albania, or eligible to apply from residence country | Article 68 requires lawful stay for first permit |
| 3. Contract proof | Foreign employment or service contract | Core digital mobile worker evidence |
| 4. Support proof | ALL 300,000 deposit or ALL 32,000 monthly income per person | Official financial threshold |
| 5. Insurance | Health insurance valid at least 1 year | Required additional document |
| 6. Criminal record | Country-of-origin certificate | Required additional document |
| 7. Formalities | Translation, recent issue, legalisation/authentication | Foreign documents must meet formal rules |
| 8. e-Albania filing | Service 15146 | Main application channel |
| 9. Fee payment | ALL 4,500 first issue, payment proof upload | Required during application |
| 10. Decision window | 4 to 12 weeks | Official processing range |
| 11. Renewal planning | Renewal fee ALL 2,250 | Start before expiry |
Core Document Checklist
| Document | Practical Note |
|---|---|
| Passport copy | Include identity pages, travel stamps, D visa if applicable, and pages relevant to entry |
| Application form | The digital mobile worker form follows the unique-permit annex format |
| Photo | Taken within the last 6 months, 47 mm x 36 mm |
| Accommodation proof | Must show suitable accommodation in Albania |
| Foreign employment contract | For remote employees of an employer abroad |
| Foreign service contract | For contractors serving a foreign contractor or customer |
| Financial proof | Deposit certificate from Albanian second-level bank or monthly income proof |
| Criminal-record certificate | From country of origin, showing whether there is a criminal record |
| Health insurance | Valid for at least 1 year |
| Payment receipt | Uploaded during the e-Albania process |
Contract Evidence
The contract should do more than say “remote worker.” It should show:
- the employer, contractor, or customer is outside Albania;
- the work can be performed through information technology;
- the worker does not need a concrete workplace in Albania;
- the contract is valid for the intended stay;
- compensation or income can be connected to the support proof.
Financial Evidence
The Ministry of Interior gives two support routes:
| Option | Threshold |
|---|---|
| Bank deposit | At least ALL 300,000 per person for 1 calendar year |
| Monthly income | At least ALL 32,000 per person |
The deposit route specifically refers to a personal or family bank deposit certificate in second-level banks in Albania. Applicants relying on foreign bank records should verify whether the authority will accept them or whether an Albanian bank certificate is expected.
Visa And Application Channel
The e-Visa portal says type D visas are for foreign citizens who intend to stay in Albania for more than 90 days in 180 days and need a visa to obtain a residence permit. The Ministry of Interior says digital mobile worker unique-permit applications are filed online through e-Albania service 15146.
The Ministry of Interior also says this category does not need employment approval. Where a type D/LD visa is required, the application is reviewed directly by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Processing And Renewal
The official unique-permit processing range is 4 to 12 weeks from application. The first digital mobile worker permit is issued for up to 1 year. The same official page lists ALL 2,250 as the renewal service fee, so renewal should be planned before expiry with updated contract, support, insurance, residence, and tax evidence.
Common Failure Points
| Risk | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| No written contract | The route requires foreign employment or service-contract proof |
| Albanian clients or employer | May need another permit category |
| Weak income trail | Support proof is explicit |
| Missing health insurance | At least 1 year is required |
| Old or unlegalised foreign documents | Official page requires recent, translated, legalised documents |
| Wrong visa assumption | Some applicants need type D/LD before residence |
| Waiting too long to renew | Renewal should be prepared before expiry |
