Sweden does not offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. For independent business owners, the closest long-stay alternative is the residence permit to run your own business in Sweden.

This route is not permission to live in Sweden while doing any remote job from anywhere. It works best where the applicant owns and actively runs a real business, has strong industry and business experience, can show customer contacts or networks, can finance both personal support and business costs, and can keep Swedish tax, F-tax, VAT, accounting, and residence evidence aligned.

Application Flow

  1. Confirm the activity is a real self-employed business, not only foreign payroll work.
  2. Check ownership, active management, industry experience, business-running experience, and language evidence.
  3. Prepare the business plan, budget, customer/network evidence, business funds, and personal maintenance funds.
  4. Apply from outside Sweden unless an official in-country exception applies.
  5. Register the business and align F-tax, VAT, employer registration, accounting, and permits where relevant.
  6. Run the business according to the reported plan and keep tax, accounting, and bank evidence.
  7. Apply for extension before expiry if the business continues.
  8. Consider permanent residence at extension after at least two years if the business can sustainably support the applicant.

Good Fit

This alternative is strongest for founders, majority-owner operators, consultants, specialists, and entrepreneurs whose presence in Sweden is needed to run a credible, lasting, profitable business.

Poor Fit

It is usually a poor fit for employees keeping a foreign payroll job from Sweden, passive shareholders, people with only financial interest in a company, tiny platform-income cases, freelancers without a credible budget or customer network, and applicants looking for a simple digital nomad permit.
