Sweden’s self-employed residence permit is evidence-heavy. The strongest files are built around the applicant’s actual role, majority ownership, business experience, budget, customers, personal support funds, and business funding.

For route fit, start with the main Sweden guide. For F-tax, VAT, accounting, and business setup, use the tax and F-tax setup guide.

Funds Snapshot

Person IncludedSwedish Migration Agency Amount
ApplicantSEK 200,000
Accompanying spouseSEK 100,000
Each accompanying childSEK 50,000

These are personal maintenance funds. They are separate from the money needed to run the business, cover expected costs and investments, or buy the business. The Swedish Migration Agency says business funding must be the applicant’s own money; loans are normally not accepted.

Filing Location And Fee

If applying for a first residence permit, the Swedish Migration Agency says the application must normally be made from outside Sweden. Some in-country exceptions exist for people with certain prior Swedish permits, such as some students, researchers, work-permit holders, or people with permits to look for work or start a business.

On the official page checked July 22, 2026, the application fee signal was SEK 2,000 for employees/self-employed people, SEK 1,500 for adult family members, and SEK 750 for children. Japanese citizens do not pay an application fee.

Extension Evidence

At extension, Sweden checks whether the business is being run according to the reported plans. Evidence can include tax records, bookkeeping, accounting statements, paid taxes and fees, required permits, absence of serious debts or payment defaults, contracts, invoices, business bank statements, and proof that the business can support the applicant and family.

This is why the first months after arrival matter. A business plan that looks good only on application day but does not translate into Swedish accounting and tax evidence can become a renewal problem.

Permanent Residence Signal

If the applicant has had a residence permit to run their own business for at least two years, they can apply for permanent residence when applying for an extension. The Swedish Migration Agency then assesses whether the applicant has met the permit conditions and can support themselves financially through the business in a sustainable way.
