Iceland Short-Term Residence Permit Alternative

Iceland’s current short-term residence permit is not a digital nomad visa. It is a limited route for foreign nationals who want to stay in Iceland for more than 90 days and no more than 180 days, mainly to visit a close family member or to visit as an artist, scientist, or athlete.

The old long-term visa framing that many remote-work guides still mention needs careful treatment. In May 2026, Iceland’s Directorate of Immigration announced that the Foreign Nationals Act provision on long-term visas had been repealed and replaced by a short-term residence permit concept.

Application Flow

1. Confirm that the purpose is not remote work, Icelandic employment, or a residence-permit category that should be used instead.
2. Confirm that the purpose fits the official short-term permit scope.
3. Prepare passport, photo, purpose evidence, support evidence, insurance, and return-ticket evidence.
4. Pay the ISK 12,200 processing fee and keep the receipt.
5. Submit the original paper application by mail or to the Directorate of Immigration drop box.
6. If approved, complete any required next steps for permit issuance.
7. Leave before the permit expires or rely only on any separate lawful Schengen visa-exempt time that applies.

Good Fit

This route is strongest for a time-limited family visit, artist visit, scientific visit, athletic visit, or similar current official purpose where no longer residence category is required.

Poor Fit

It is usually a poor fit for ordinary digital nomads, foreign payroll employees, freelancers wanting to work from Iceland, people seeking settlement, applicants who need family reunification, and anyone relying on the pre-2026 remote-work visa framing.
