Iceland short-term residence applications should start with purpose fit. The permit is not a fallback for every person who wants to stay longer than 90 days.

Document Formalities

The Directorate says supporting documents generally need to be originals or confirmed copies. Foreign documents may need legal authentication. Documents not in English or a Nordic language must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Support evidence deserves extra care. The official supporting-documents page says a bank statement must be certified by the bank itself and submitted as an original document. A printout from online banking is not considered sufficient.

Filing And Processing

The application form should be downloaded, completed, printed, and signed. The paper application and supporting documents can be sent by mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box at Dalvegur 18, 201 Kopavogur.

After registration, the applicant should receive confirmation by email. The official page warns that information about the application cannot be received by phone, email, or online chat while it is waiting to be processed.

Approval And Stay Management

If approved, the Directorate contacts the applicant with next steps. Because the permit is capped at 180 days, cannot be renewed, and does not support permanent residence, the exit plan is part of the compliance plan from the beginning.
