Finland does not offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. For independent operators and founders, the relevant long-stay alternatives are the residence permit for an entrepreneur and the residence permit for a startup entrepreneur.

These routes are not simple permission to live in Finland while doing any remote job. The ordinary entrepreneur permit is for people who will pursue business activities through a qualifying business form and earn their living primarily from that business. The startup entrepreneur route is for high-growth startup founders with a positive Business Finland Eligibility Statement and enough personal financial resources.

Application Flow

  1. Decide whether the case is ordinary entrepreneurship, startup entrepreneurship, employment, or another route.
  2. For ordinary entrepreneurship, confirm the business form, Business ID position, Trade Register needs, profitability, and evidence.
  3. For startup entrepreneurship, obtain a positive Business Finland Eligibility Statement before submitting the residence permit application.
  4. Prepare passport, identity, company, business-plan, finance, customer, and income evidence.
  5. Submit the first residence permit application abroad unless an official exception applies.
  6. Register and operate the business consistently with the permit basis, including tax registrations and accounting.
  7. Apply for extension before expiry if the business or startup continues.
  8. Track the permanent residence rules because Finland changed the permanent residence framework on January 8, 2026.

Good Fit

This alternative is strongest for founders, owner-operators, consultants with a real Finnish business, and startup teams building an internationally scalable company from Finland.

Poor Fit

It is usually a poor fit for foreign payroll employees, passive shareholders, light entrepreneurs using invoicing-service platforms as the core plan, hobby-scale freelancers, and applicants looking for a simple digital nomad permit.
