Slovakia does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. The closest structured alternative for independent operators is temporary residence for the purpose of business.
For evidence and timing, see the timeline and documents guide. For trade licensing, Commercial Register, tax registration, VAT, and accounting, use the tax and business setup guide. The structured programme record is Slovakia Business Residence Permit Alternative.
Quick Answer
Slovakia can work for a third-country founder or self-employed operator with a real business plan, financial coverage, qualifications, and evidence of economic benefit. It is not a general permission slip for keeping a foreign payroll job or running a paper company from Slovakia.

Business Residence Logic
The Ministry of Economy explains that the Foreign Police decides applications for temporary residence for business, while the Ministry gives a sub-opinion on whether the business activity benefits the Slovak economy.
That economic-benefit review is now central. From July 1, 2025, a business plan is mandatory for first business-residence applications. The Ministry says the plan is assessed for quality, feasibility, sustainability, and expected contribution to the economy, such as job creation or activity in shortage sectors.
For renewals, the review becomes less theoretical. The Ministry looks at whether the applicant is conducting real, not virtual, business in Slovakia, including tax compliance, employees, and contribution to reducing unemployment in districts.
Remote-Work Fit
Foreign customers are not automatically a problem. A Slovak consulting, software, design, engineering, advisory, or startup business can serve clients abroad.
The weak pattern is different: a person wants to live in Slovakia while remaining a foreign employee, issuing invoices through a minimal shell, or holding a passive role in a company. That should not be dressed up as business residence.
Trade Licence And Register Logic
The EU Immigration Portal says a self-employed worker in Slovakia must obtain temporary residence for business and satisfy other conditions, such as obtaining a trade licence. It also says that if the person wants to be self-employed on a trade licence and does not have permanent residence in an EU/OECD member state, they must also apply for entry in the Commercial Register.
Slovensko.sk adds that foreign persons may conduct business in Slovakia under the same conditions and to the same extent as Slovak persons unless law provides otherwise, and describes foreign-entity and organisational-unit routes for doing business.
Renewal And Residence Path
Business residence can be granted for the period necessary for business, up to 3 years. Renewal should be treated as an evidence exercise: tax filings, accounting, bank records, invoices, contracts, premises, employees, language/qualification evidence, and business results need to support the original plan.
Slovakia has long-term and permanent residence paths, but they are separate applications with their own legal conditions. A business residence permit should not be treated as an automatic settlement promise.
Good Fit / Poor Fit
Good fit if:
- the applicant will run real business activity in Slovakia;
- the business plan is credible and supported by evidence;
- financial coverage is documented;
- qualifications, experience, contracts, premises, and customers support the plan;
- tax, VAT, accounting, and renewal records can stay coherent.
Poor fit if:
- the applicant only wants to keep a foreign payroll job;
- the company is virtual or passive;
- the business plan is generic and unsupported;
- there is no economic-benefit story;
- the applicant wants a simple digital nomad visa.
