Portugal ARI is not a single appointment. It is a sequence: investment selection, evidence creation, online pre-registration, fee payment, AIMA scheduling, biometrics, card issuance, and renewal.
For route fit, start with the main Portugal ARI guide. For choosing the investment route, use the investment routes and due diligence guide.
Timeline Summary
| Stage | What To Prepare | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Eligibility check | Third-country nationality, Schengen entry, clean record, investment route | ARI is not for EU/EEA/Swiss/Andorra or Portuguese nationals |
| 2. Route selection | Fund, culture, research, jobs, or company capitalisation | Real estate and passive capital transfer are closed |
| 3. Due diligence | Legal, investment, tax, AML, source of funds, exit analysis | Investment risk is now central |
| 4. Investment evidence | Route-specific certificate, statement, contract, or institutional proof | Core ARI evidence |
| 5. Portal ARI registration | Applicant, passport, contacts, representative, investment type | AIMA requires online pre-registration |
| 6. Document upload | Common and specific documents | AIMA reviews the file before appointment |
| 7. DUC payment | Documento Unico de Cobranca generated by portal | Required fee-payment mechanism |
| 8. AIMA appointment | One in-person attendance at an AIMA location | Document check and biometrics |
| 9. Card issuance | Temporary ARI card | Valid for 2 years |
| 10. Renewal | Maintain investment, stay days, documents, and fees | Renewals are for 2-year periods |
| 11. Long-term planning | Permanent residence, long-term residence, nationality, tax | Different rules and clocks apply |
Portal ARI
AIMA says Portal ARI supports registration of the ARI application and family reunification, registration of legal representatives, upload of documents, generation of DUC fee payment, and appointment scheduling. The portal asks for investor identity, passport, investment type, Portuguese address and contact details where available, and representative details where used.
That means the file should be organised before upload, not improvised inside the portal.
Common Document Themes
Exact document lists can vary by investment route and applicant profile, but ARI files usually need:
| Document Type | Practical Note |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid travel document and identity pages |
| Schengen entry or lawful stay evidence | Article 90-A refers to regularising stay after entry |
| Criminal-record certificates | Timing, apostille/legalisation, and translation matter |
| Tax number and tax authority evidence | Often needed for Portuguese financial and tax interactions |
| Social-security evidence or declaration | Check the exact AIMA requirement for the file |
| Accommodation or Portuguese address evidence | Useful for forms and later residence/tax status |
| Investment proof | Route-specific and usually decisive |
| Source-of-funds evidence | Needed for bank, fund, AML, and sometimes immigration review |
| Family documents | Marriage, birth, dependency, custody, apostille/legalisation, translation |
| Representative mandate | Needed if a lawyer or authorised representative submits |
Investment Evidence
| Route | Evidence Focus |
|---|---|
| Fund | Subscription documents, fund/manager statements, bank transfer proof, eligibility confirmations |
| Culture | Eligible entity confirmation, support agreement, payment proof, public-interest/cultural basis |
| Research | Institution status, research activity, capital transfer, confirmation letter |
| Jobs | Employment contracts, payroll, social-security registration, company evidence |
| Company capitalisation | Corporate documents, share-capital proof, job creation or maintenance records |
Timing Reality
AIMA’s official pages explain the portal and the legal route, but they do not promise a fast end-to-end processing timeline in the ARI page. Investors should plan for delays, especially around appointment availability, inherited backlogs, and document validity.
The safest timeline practice is to track two clocks:
- immigration clock: submission, pre-approval, appointment, biometrics, card issue, renewal;
- investment clock: subscription, capital call, holding period, liquidity window, exit rights.
Those clocks rarely line up perfectly.
Renewals
AIMA announced that ARI renewals became available through the Renewal Portal from February 16, 2026. Renewal is not just a button click: the investor should still be ready to prove the investment is maintained, the minimum stay rule is met, fees are paid, and family members remain eligible.
Keep a renewal folder with:
| Record | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Residence card | Shows current status |
| Passport | Identity and travel validity |
| Entry-exit records | Supports the 7/14-day minimum stay logic |
| Investment statements | Shows route maintained |
| Fund/company/culture/research confirmations | Route-specific evidence |
| Tax and social-security evidence | Often requested in residence processes |
| Family civil-status documents | Needed if family renews or is added |
