Timeline At A Glance

Who Can Be Included

The official FAQ lists the following eligible dependants:

• spouse;
• minor children of the main applicant or spouse;
• adult children of the main applicant or spouse who are unmarried and principally dependent on the main applicant;
• adult children unable to cope independently because of a medical condition or disability.

If a minor child will not be accompanied by both parents, or if the applicant does not hold sole custody, prior approval from Residency Malta is required. These requests are examined case by case.

When Dependants Can Be Added

The safest assumption is that family members should be included from the beginning. Residency Malta says dependants cannot be added after payment or after approval.

The exception is for newborns, where specific forms and documents must be submitted by email. New dependants may also be added when the main applicant applies for renewal.

Renewal Rules

The first Nomad Residence Permit is valid for one year from the issuance of the residence card. It may be renewed three times, for a maximum total stay of four years, if the holder still satisfies the programme criteria.

For renewal, permit holders must show bank transactions carried out in Malta as proof that they resided in Malta for at least five cumulative months over the previous 12 months.

Renewal should be submitted between two and three months before the current permit expires. The applicant is responsible for keeping immigration status regular in Malta; a receipt of application is not an extension of stay.

Good Fit / Poor Fit

Good fit if:

• your family composition is clear before application;
• you can document dependency or custody issues where needed;
• you can spend enough time in Malta to support renewal;
• you understand the permit is temporary, not permanent residence.

Poor fit if:

• you expect to add family members freely after approval;
• you cannot show five cumulative months in Malta for renewal;
• your goal is long-term residence, permanent residence, or citizenship.
