Hungary White Card Family and Extension Rules

Hungary’s White Card is one of the clearest digital nomad routes in Europe, but it is not family-friendly and it is not designed as a settlement bridge.

Family members of a White Card holder or White Card applicant are not granted residence permits for family reunification. The narrow exception is a third-country national child born in Hungary during the White Card’s validity. The White Card can be extended once for the same purpose, and the extension requires at least 90 days of residence in Hungary within any 180-day period before filing.

No Family Reunification

NDGAP states that family members of a third-country national who holds or applies for a White Card shall not be granted a residence permit for family reunification.

This is not a soft preference or a missing checklist item. It is a core limitation of the route.

Child Born In Hungary

There is one narrow exception. If a third-country national White Card holder gives birth to a third-country national child in Hungary during the validity of the residence permit, the child receives a residence permit for family reunification after notification of the child’s birth.

This exception should not be expanded into a general dependant strategy.

One-Time Extension

The White Card may be valid for up to one year and may be extended once for another year. It can only be extended once for the same purpose.

The extension application must be submitted in Hungary through Enter Hungary. It can be filed no more than 90 days before expiry and no later than 30 days before expiry.

Presence Requirement For Extension

Extension is possible only if the applicant holds a valid residence permit at the time of submission and has resided in Hungary with the residence permit for at least 90 days within any 180-day period before filing.

This makes travel planning important. A nomad who spends too much time outside Hungary may weaken the extension strategy.

No Switching To Another Purpose

NDGAP states that during the validity of the White Card and after its expiry, no other residence permit may be applied for another purpose.

That restriction is unusually important. If the person expects to become locally employed, found a Hungarian company, study, or move to a family route, the White Card may be the wrong starting point.
