Spain’s digital nomad route can support a family move, but the family file is not just an attachment to the main applicant’s remote-work evidence. Relationship documents, income increments, insurance, and timing all need separate planning.

For the core route, start with the Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide. For documents, use the documents checklist. For income math, use the income requirements guide.

Quick Answer

Family members may include a spouse or analogous partner, minor children, adult children who are financially dependent and have not formed their own family unit, and dependent ascendants. Family members can apply jointly, at the same time, or later. UGE says family authorizations allow work in Spain, both as an employee and as self-employed.

Timeline At A Glance

  1. Decide whether family members will apply with the main applicant or later.
  2. Confirm relationship category for each dependant.
  3. Calculate household income using the current SMI.
  4. Gather civil-status, dependency, custody, and care evidence.
  5. Legalise or apostille public documents where required.
  6. Prepare sworn translations where the filing office requires Spanish.
  7. Submit through the consulate or UGE channel.
  8. If staying beyond the first visa, plan the UGE authorization and TIE steps before expiry.

Eligible Family Members

Spain’s official guidance lists these main family categories for the teleworker route:

  • spouse or registered/analogous partner;
  • minor children;
  • adult children who are financially dependent on the teleworker and have not formed their own family unit;
  • ascendants who are under the teleworker’s care.

Family applications depend on evidence, not labels. A spouse usually needs a marriage certificate. A registered partner needs registration evidence. An unregistered partner may need evidence of a stable relationship for at least one year, unless there are children in common and stable cohabitation is proven.

Family Evidence

Family MemberEvidence To Prepare
SpouseMarriage certificate
Registered partnerPartnership registration certificate
Unregistered partnerStable-relationship and cohabitation evidence
Minor childBirth certificate and any custody or consent evidence
Adult childFinancial-dependency and civil-status evidence
AscendantEvidence that the relative is under the worker’s care

Foreign civil documents normally need apostille or legalisation and, where applicable, official translation into Spanish. Some consulates require original and copy for family relationship documents.

Family Work Rights

UGE’s family guidance states that family residence authorizations under Law 14/2013 allow the holder to work in Spain, both as an employee and as self-employed.

That is important for household planning, but it does not remove professional licensing, tax, Social Security, or employer compliance requirements. A family member’s right to work is not the same as automatic registration with every professional body or tax regime.

Renewal And Continuation

The digital nomad visa itself can be valid for up to one year. PRIE says that people who want to continue in Spain should apply for the corresponding residence authorization before the visa expires.

The UGE residence authorization can be granted for up to three years. Older UGE renewal guidance refers to filing renewals 60 calendar days before expiry and up to 90 calendar days after expiry, with possible penalty after expiry. Recheck the current filing window before relying on those dates.

Good Fit / Poor Fit

Good fit if:

  • the family structure is easy to document;
  • the main applicant’s income comfortably clears the household threshold;
  • civil documents can be legalised and translated in time;
  • the household has a realistic plan for insurance, schooling, work, and TIE timing.

Poor fit if:

  • adult-dependency evidence is weak;
  • an unregistered partnership is hard to prove;
  • the family needs immediate work, school, or healthcare certainty;
  • continuation planning is left until the visa is close to expiry.

Practical Watchpoints

  • Family evidence often takes longer than the main applicant’s work evidence.
  • Do not assume a partner category without checking the specific consulate or UGE document list.
  • Adult children and ascendants require more than proof of relationship.
  • Keep income calculations updated when Spain’s SMI changes.
  • Family work rights do not settle tax, Social Security, or licensing questions.
