What Immediate Family Reunification Means

Slovenia’s Ministry of the Interior describes the digital nomad route as having a more favourable family-reunification regime. Digital nomads may reunite with family members immediately, without restrictions linked to how long the foreigner has already lived in Slovenia or how long the permit remains valid.

In practice, that makes the route more useful for families than a permit that requires months or years of prior residence before dependants can join.

Family Documents To Prepare

Family applications normally need relationship and admissibility evidence. Prepare early:

• passports;
• marriage, civil-union, partnership, or birth records;
• evidence of dependency where relevant;
• criminal-record certificates if requested;
• health insurance for each family member;
• accommodation/address evidence;
• translations or legalisation for civil-status documents where required.

Ask the receiving mission or administrative unit how it treats unmarried partners, adult dependants, document age, apostille, legalisation, and translations.

The One-Year Limit

The digital nomad permit may be issued for up to one year. It cannot be extended as the same permit.

That rule shapes family planning. School terms, lease commitments, insurance periods, employment permissions for spouses, and tax residence should all be planned against a temporary stay rather than an assumed renewal.

What Happens After Year One

There are three common paths:

The ministry says a digital nomad who wants to continue residing in Slovenia may apply during the validity of the digital-nomad permit for another type of temporary residence permit based on a different purpose of stay.

Switching To Local Employment

The digital nomad route is not for entering the Slovenian labour market. If the plan changes and the applicant wants to work for a Slovenian employer or otherwise take up local work, that should be handled through the relevant Slovenian work or residence route.

Do not assume the digital nomad permit itself authorises ordinary Slovenian employment. The point of the category is foreign remote work.
