Slovakia’s EU Blue Card salary rule is formula-based. The national single-permit route is broader and does not use one Blue Card salary threshold for all cases, but the employer still needs a coherent Slovak employment file.
For route choice, start with Slovakia Single Permit vs EU Blue Card.
Salary Snapshot
| Rule | Formula | Working 2026 Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Standard EU Blue Card | At least 1.2x the average wage in the Slovak economy | EUR 1,944/month, using the Statistical Office’s 2025 EUR 1,620 average wage |
| Recent university graduate rule | At least the average wage where the applicant obtained a university degree in the last 3 years and the rule applies | EUR 1,620/month |
| Temporary residence for employment / single permit | No single Blue Card formula | Role, contract, employer, vacancy, and Labour Office confirmation drive the file |
| Separate Slovak work permit | Not a Blue Card threshold route | Limited cases such as seasonal work, seafarers, some family-reunion and long-term-EU-resident cases, or treaty cases |
Qualification Evidence
IOM Slovakia describes the EU Blue Card as a route for highly qualified employment. The current requirements include higher professional qualifications proved by a university degree, or advanced professional skills only for ICT managers and specialists.
That makes the Blue Card more than a salary route. A serious file should align the job title, job description, salary, contract length, university or ICT evidence, and Labour Office confirmation.
Single-Permit Contrast
Temporary residence for employment is tied to a concrete employer, position, and place of work. It can be based on Labour Office confirmation of the possibility to fill a vacancy, a narrower work permit, a no-confirmation/no-permit case, seasonal employment, or intra-corporate transfer.
For ordinary employment, the practical question is not whether the salary reaches the Blue Card threshold. It is whether the Slovak employer can support the vacancy and Labour Office sequence, the employment contract fits the residence purpose, and the applicant can document identity, background, accommodation, and other residence conditions.
Regulated Professions
For regulated professions, qualification recognition can become a separate gating issue. Do not assume that a foreign diploma, licence, or title is enough for Slovak employment just because it supports salary or seniority.
Editorial Status
This article was checked against official IOM Slovakia, EU Immigration Portal, and Slovak Statistical Office sources on July 22, 2026. Salary figures should be rechecked whenever Slovakia publishes a newer average wage figure for Blue Card purposes.
