Portugal’s digital nomad route can support a family move, but family evidence should be planned as its own workstream. The main applicant’s remote-work eligibility does not automatically make every relative’s file simple.
For overall eligibility, start with the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa guide. For forms and evidence, use the documents checklist. For costs and stages, see the timeline and costs guide.
Quick Answer
AIMA’s family reunification rules list spouses, minor or incapable children, certain adopted children, dependent adult children studying in Portugal, dependent first-degree ascendants, and some unmarried partners. The remote-work residence permit itself is valid for two years from issue and renewable for successive three-year periods.
Key Facts
| Item | Current Rule Or Watchpoint |
|---|---|
| Main residence card | 2 years from issue |
| Renewal | Successive 3-year periods |
| Family basis | Family reunification under Portugal’s foreigners regime |
| Spouse | Listed by AIMA as eligible family |
| Minor children | Listed where dependent on the couple or one spouse |
| Unmarried partner | Possible where a de facto union is properly proven |
| Dependent adult children | Listed in specific cases, including unmarried children studying in Portugal |
| Parent evidence | Dependent ascendants may need dependency proof |
| Family document language | Foreign-language documents generally need translation under official guidance |
| Automatic extensions | AIMA announced an end to automatic residence-permit validity extensions after October 15, 2025 |
Timeline At A Glance
- Decide whether relatives apply with the main visa file or through family reunification.
- Collect civil-status documents before the visa appointment.
- Legalise or apostille public documents where required.
- Translate documents where the checklist or AIMA guidance requires it.
- Keep proof of accommodation and means of subsistence aligned with the whole household.
- If using the residence route, complete the main applicant’s AIMA residence stage in Portugal.
- File or complete family reunification steps according to the applicable AIMA or consular procedure.
- Start renewal before the card expires and keep proof of the renewal process.
Who Can Usually Be Included
AIMA’s family reunification page lists eligible family members under the general foreigners regime. The main categories include:
- spouse;
- minor or incapable children dependent on the couple or one spouse;
- adopted minors where the adoption decision is recognised under the relevant rules;
- unmarried adult children who are dependent and studying in Portugal in specific cases;
- dependent first-degree ascendants of the resident or spouse;
- minor siblings under the resident’s legal guardianship in specific circumstances;
- a de facto partner where the relationship is duly proven.
This is a legal category list, not a guarantee. The exact route depends on whether the family member is outside Portugal, already in Portugal, applying with the main applicant, or joining later.
Family Evidence
Family applications usually require civil-status documents and proof that the relationship fits the claimed category.
| Relationship | Evidence To Prepare |
|---|---|
| Spouse | Marriage certificate |
| Minor child | Birth certificate and, where relevant, consent or custody evidence |
| Adult dependent child | Birth certificate, dependency evidence, and study evidence where required |
| Parent | Family relationship and economic dependency evidence |
| De facto partner | Documents proving a de facto union for more than two years |
AIMA also lists authenticated passport copies for the family member, proof of family relationship, Portuguese residence address evidence, means of subsistence, and criminal-record evidence for the family member in the family-outside-Portugal procedure.
Renewal Planning
AIMA’s remote-work residence permit page states that the temporary residence permit is valid for two years from the date the card is issued and can be renewed for successive three-year periods.
Renewal should not be left until the last month. AIMA announced that automatic extensions of residence permit validity ended after October 15, 2025. The same announcement says that after a renewal request is registered and the relevant fees are paid, a receipt valid for 180 days is issued.
Good Fit / Poor Fit
Good fit if:
- the main applicant clearly qualifies for the remote-work route;
- family relationships are easy to document;
- household income and accommodation make sense for the whole family;
- public documents can be legalised, translated, and kept current.
Poor fit if:
- the family structure depends on weak or hard-to-authenticate documents;
- an adult relative is not clearly dependent under the relevant category;
- the family needs school, healthcare, tax, or work-rights certainty before moving;
- renewal timing would be left until after card expiry.
Practical Watchpoints
- Family evidence often takes longer than remote-work evidence.
- Civil documents may need apostille, legalisation, certified copies, or translation.
- Family members outside Portugal and family members already in Portugal can follow different procedures.
- Accommodation evidence should match the actual household size and address.
- Keep renewal receipts and AIMA communications organised.
