France does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. The closest long-stay alternative for independent workers is usually the entrepreneur/profession liberale route, but only where the applicant is genuinely creating or carrying out an independent activity in France.
For document and timing planning, see the timeline and documents guide. For tax, social, and activity-boundary issues, use the tax and social setup guide. If the person has French employment instead, compare the France Talent Passport and EU Blue Card routes. The structured programme hub is France Entrepreneur / Profession Liberale Visa Alternative.
Quick Answer
France’s entrepreneur/profession liberale route can fit a third-country national who wants to create or participate in a commercial, industrial, craft, agricultural, or liberal professional activity in France. France-Visas says the person receives a one-year VLS-TS marked entrepreneur/profession liberale, provided it is validated after arrival. New businesses must show economic viability. Existing or liberal activity applicants must show sufficient resources, at least the French full-time minimum wage equivalent.

Entrepreneur / Profession Liberale Route
France-Visas covers people who want to create or participate in a commercial, industrial, craft, or agricultural activity, or work in a liberal profession in France.
The route is activity-based. The applicant must be able to carry out the professional activity in France and complete the related formalities after arrival.
Resource And Viability Requirement
If the applicant is setting up a new business, France-Visas says they must demonstrate economic viability.
If the applicant wants to work in a liberal profession or in an activity already created, they must prove sufficient financial resources, equivalent to at least the legal minimum wage in France for a full-time worker. Service-Public’s June 1, 2026 page shows EUR 1,867.02 monthly in the relevant activity-resource examples.
Talent Passport Founder Alternative
The talent passport business creator route is separate. France-Visas says the applicant must prove a real and serious business creation project in France, invest at least EUR 30,000, and hold a master’s-level degree or prove at least five years of comparable professional experience. It can support a multi-year residence permit with a maximum validity of four years.
That route may fit stronger founders, but it is not a generic digital nomad path either.
Good Fit / Poor Fit
Good fit if:
- the activity is genuinely independent and France-based;
- the project has economic viability or sufficient resources;
- the applicant can document qualifications and professional experience;
- regulated profession rules are manageable;
- French tax, social, and registration steps are planned.
Poor fit if:
- the applicant only wants to keep a foreign employment job from France;
- there is no French business or liberal professional activity;
- resources sit below the minimum-wage benchmark;
- the activity is regulated and authorisation is missing;
- the applicant wants a simple digital nomad permit.
