Austria’s self-employed key worker and start-up founder paths are business-case applications. The practical timeline depends on building evidence before filing, then passing residence-authority and AMS review.

For route fit, start with the main Austria guide. For trade registration, SVS, tax, insurance, and work-boundary planning, use the tax and trade setup guide.

Self-Employed Key Worker Evidence

For self-employed key workers, Migration.gv.at says there is no points system. The key issue is macroeconomic benefit beyond the business’s own operational benefit.

Useful evidence can include a sustained transfer of at least EUR 100,000 in investment capital, job creation or job security, know-how transfer, new technologies, or proof that the business is considerably significant for a region. The business plan should not read like a generic client pitch; it should explain why Austria benefits.

Start-up Founder Evidence

For start-up founders, the file should show an innovative product, service, processing method, or technology. It also needs a consistent business plan, founder control, at least EUR 30,000 company capital, at least 50% equity share, and at least 50 points.

The points evidence should be organised cleanly: qualification, work experience, language skills, additional investment capital, incubator or funding support, and age where relevant.

Fee And AMS Timing

Migration.gv.at lists an application fee of EUR 218 for both self-employed key workers and start-up founders on the pages checked July 22, 2026.

The residence authority forwards the file to the Public Employment Service, AMS. Migration.gv.at says AMS issues its expertise on macroeconomic benefit within three weeks. That does not mean the whole residence process finishes in three weeks; it is the AMS expert-review signal inside the wider application process.

Follow-Up Title

Self-employed key workers receive a Red-White-Red Card first. After two years, a settlement permit can be issued if the legal requirements are met. After a completed total settlement period of two years, the settlement permit can be issued for three years.

Start-up founders receive a Red-White-Red Card for the first two years. After that, a Red-White-Red Card plus may follow if the legal requirements are met. The Red-White-Red Card plus gives fixed-term settlement and unlimited labour market access.
